[Cause]
1. Electrolyte deficiency or imbalance
A deficiency of minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium can disrupt the balance of muscle contraction and relaxation, making cramps more likely to occur.
2. Dehydration
When your body is dehydrated, your muscles become less functional and you are more likely to develop cramps.
3. Poor circulation
If you maintain the same posture for a long time or if blood flow is reduced due to cold weather, your muscles will not function properly and you will be more likely to get cramps.
Cramps that occur while sleeping are also related to reduced blood flow.
4. Muscle fatigue and lack of exercise
When fatigue accumulates after intense exercise, muscles are more likely to contract abnormally. Conversely, cramps are also more likely to occur when muscles are weak due to lack of exercise.
5. Changes in body temperature (chilliness)
When your feet get cold, your muscles tend to contract, making you more susceptible to cramps.
This can happen when you sleep in a cold environment or while swimming in a pool.
6. Effects of illness or medication
Cramps can also be caused by diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, and nerve disorders.
It can also occur as a side effect of some medications, such as diuretics and statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs).
[Prevention and countermeasures]
1. Mineral supplementation: Eat a balanced diet, especially foods that are rich in magnesium and potassium (bananas, nuts, seaweed, etc.).
2. Hydration: Drink plenty of water daily, and consume electrolyte-containing drinks, especially during exercise or after sweating.
3. Moderate exercise and stretching: Stretch thoroughly before and after exercise, and exercise moderately on a regular basis.
4. Improve blood circulation: Take a warm bath or get a massage to improve blood flow.
5. Measures to prevent cold feet: Wear socks, especially when sleeping, and use thicker bedding to keep your feet warm.
If you experience frequent cramps, it may be a sign of an underlying illness, so it's a good idea to consult a doctor.
